Biography 1939-2008

Gernot Kissel, born 1939 in Worms on the Rhine, Germany, was an Engineer and Architect. A self taught painter, he started painting at 18 and has been painting ever since. He sadly passed away in 2008, but his powerful work will be living on. His second book "Kissel. Er selbst" was launched in England in 2008 and is available (see Events)

His still lifes and landscapes are strong and bold expressionist works with vibrant colour and stark line. KISSEL is better known, however, for his female nudes or portraits which are painted with an almost disconcerting bold assurance. His female figures have a direct and powerful sensuality and force the observer to admire them. These paintings are like a love for women.

Gernot Kissel draws inevitably and worthy comparison to the highly regarded and extremely fashionable German Expressionists of the early 20th century, particularly Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Erich Heckel and in terms of portraiture, Alexey von Jawlensky. Further comparison may be drawn to the lavish and stylish canvases of Kees van Dongen or the deep sense of colour as used by the British artist Sir Matthew Smith. Using these foundations, Gernot strives for his own and unique form of expression. Please look at his paintings thoroughly and they will offer you a shock as strong as rare.

Gernot KISSEL’s work has been successfully exhibited and collected widely throughout the Continent with a growing reputation also in England after his Solo Shows in London, Richmond and Newcastle in 1997, 1999, 2001 and from 2004 - 2008 yearly and in many Art Fairs. In June 2008 he had an Exhibition in New York City. His paintings are in Museums and shown in various European Galleries and private collections.
