Andy Warhol created his Ladies and Gentlemen portfolio is 1975. The portfolio consists of 10 portraits of drag queens from a well-known New York City nightclub called The Gilded Grape. Warhol told the ladies to dress and pose however they wanted and photographed them with a Poloroid camera. He then transferred these portraits to silkscreen, and used his trademark color blocking technique to decorate the ladies in bright, celebratory colors. Warhol’s Ladies and Gentlemen is a celebration of the drag queens and their freedom to express themselves. These screenprints are from an edition of 25 Artist Proofs, and all 10 have matching edition numbers.
