"Land of confusion" is part of my series "Being Marilyn Monroe. Icon Portraits.", a series of self-portraits reflecting and expressing my admiration for and my identification with inspiring modern day icons such as Marilyn Monroe, Frida Kahlo, Audrey Hepburn, Maria Callas, Romy Schneider, Michael Jackson, Grace Kelly nad Niki de Saint Phalle. The series is influenced by the work of surrealist female artists like Frida Kahlo and Niki de St. Phalle as well as by Italian author Luigi Pirandello's post-modernist approach on identity theory. And it is based on a series of coincidences, that brought me to explore and re-think the inherent nature of portraying providing a practical meaning to the American poet William Carlos Williams' quote: «The artist is always and forever painting only one thing: a self-portrait».
To Grace Kelly I feel attracted because of her talent, “grace” and noblesse. Like Maria Callas she left art for love, marrying Prince Rainier of Monaco. She changed many roles with the role of a lifetime. Grace is the incarnation of every girls dream to become a princess. And a warning too, because castles can be gilded cages, and lovers a nightmare.
The idea to make Me as Grace united to Fantomas has been inspired by a friend, artist Udo Linke. And we are both actually working on this couple.
"Land of confusion" is more than just a celebrity self-portrait, like in the beginning of my Icon Self-Portrait Series. It refers to the world I am living in, to personal experiences. What's in my mind is blended with how I feel and what I see around me.
