Thomas Ruff created his groundbreaking Substratum (or 'Substrat') series in 2001. This series consists of camera-less photographs made without negatives. Ruff appropriated these images from Japanese anime or Manga from the internet, which often features intense neon colors. He then blurred and superimposed the images until they could no longer be identified, adding more and more layers of color in Photoshop until he says they were no longer 'photographs.' Ruff's Substratum series pushes the boundaries of photography through his use of abstraction, a result of the summation of visual information.

The artist has created a series of editioned chromogenic prints, with this being the latest in the series and arguably one of the most vibrant.
