Child with Accordion (L’Enfant a L’ Accordeon)
Original aquatint with colour screenprint. 1953. Signed in ballpoint pen. Numbered (5) from the edition of 75, plus 25 artist's proof impressions. This impression also inscribed as: Ep d'Artiste. Etched and printed at the studio of Haasen, Paris, 1953. Issued and published by the artist himself (in association with Editions Falaize).
Note: Leger made only three works in aquatint. He was attracted to the medium as he wanted to use the broad black form strokes seen in his linked paintings. He tried this in lithography but was not entirely happy with the effects; aquatint allowed him to create great density of line together with texture. Haasen , the printer, records that he became fascinated by the medium but in fact did not use it extensively. The colours were overprinted using screenprinting, for which Haasen was very highly regarded.
