Matisse: His Art and His Public
This lithograph appeared in the first 495 copies of the major monograph "Matisse: His Art and His Public" published in 1951 by the Museum of Modern Art and written by Alfred Barr Jr. One of the most important art historians of his generation, Barr was the influential founding curator of the museum, and he published this important study in conjunction with their major retrospective of Matisse's work. A fine specimen of Matisse's lyrical draftsmanship, this lithograph captures the essence of the woman's face in a few swift lines. The signed page is framed behind the lithograph, and it is revealed through a window on the reverse.
