Untitled #4 (from Stedelijk Museum), 1990
Each lithograph was originally published to accompany the deluxe edition portfolio for Martin's 1991 retrospective at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. This print was created under Agnes Martin's direct supervision. The provenance is excellent, as this is the first time the lithograph will have been separated from the 1991 Stedelijk Museum slipcase where it has been held.
Martin was rarely involved in the promotional materials for her exhibitions, but she was actively involved in the creation of the publications for this show.
Despite her close association with the Minimalists, Martin described her work as Abstract Expressionist in line with Rothko's. As Mark Stevens, one of the portfolio contributors wrote, "Martin is closest to Rothko and his moody geometries, though she whispers where he rumbles. She became recognized for her delicate use of pencil and sparing application of color." Sold individually, please contact the gallery should you wish to see other editions we have in stock.
