'Laugh'
Maggi Hambling watercolour with ink and gouache. Signed and dated 24/05/1991 bottom right. This watercolour is from the ‘Towards Laughter’ series, and it is also reproduced in the Yale Center for Visual Art catalogue ‘MAGGI HAMBLING: An Eye Through A Decade 1981 – 1991′, accompanying Hambling’s exhibition there in 1991. The Yale Center’s label is on reverse of frame. This watercolour is plate 112, p.37 in this prestigious catalogue and is entitled ‘Laugh’. ‘Towards Laughter’ was a series of works in which Maggi attempted to paint the abstract concept of the human laugh, with considerable success.
