A renowned skateboarder and self-taught woodworker, Haroshi makes his works by stacking skateboards and handcarving them before painting and polishing them into veneered finished objects. The boards' edges peek through as they form layers and layers of colour. Inspired by a 12th-century Buddhist sculpture, Unkei, Haroshi places a broken piece of skateboard into its centre before completion, thus giving it a 'soul'.

His remit features well-known objects, including skulls, teddy bears and trainers. This work shows a delicate horse in motion, one foreleg severed at the joint. Head pulled back, it charges into the unknown, a streak of colour against a dark background.
