Ballet, Ballerina in Crate, East Village, New York City, 2015
JR has had a long-standing interest in ballet, but his direct collaboration with ballet dancers started in 2014 when he was commissioned by the New York City Ballet to design and make a large installation on their premises. “It was the first time they had let a non-choreographer take over the stage, ” JR recalls. “So for me it was a big responsibility.” By forging collaborations between the worlds of ballet and street art, JR broke down social barriers and introduced both sides with new media.
