Pasiphae
Pair of original limited edition linocuts (issued on a single sheet) for the 1944 livre d'artiste (artist book), Pasiphae.
Conceived as ornamental flourishes to complement the text, these fine linocuts feature gracious and delicately flowing lines reminiscent of ancient medieval manuscript illumination.
These examples were published in 1981 by Matisse's estate in a small Roman numeral edition of 25. (There was only one other Arabic numeral edition of 100 issued before the plates were cancelled.) The sheet is both numbered from the edition lower left and given a blind stamp with Matisse's initials "HM".
