An original exhibition poster published on the occasion of "Andy Warhol: 10 Statues of Liberty", held at Galerie Lavignes-Bastille, Paris from 8th April - 30th May 1986. A small lifetime edition of 500.
Warhol created his first images of the Statue of Liberty in 1962, basing two full-length paintings of the subject on a postcard of New York Harbour. A shrewd observer of popular culture, he returned to the subject in the mid-1980s to coincide with the centennial anniversary of the statue's installation in 1986. It had undergone a costly two-year renovation project, and as the 4th July approached the media anticipation for its unveiling reached fever pitch. Fascinated by the way the sculpture had penetrated every level of American visual culture, Warhol selected the image for his artworks from the lid of a commemorative tin of cookies. As ever, irony was a key ingredient of the final artwork.
Ten of Warhol's large-scale Statue of Liberty canvases received their world premiere at the Galerie Lavignes-Bastille, a fitting exchange for the statue that had been gifted to the American people by the French state in 1886. The artist travelled to Paris to attend the opening in person, but the show was an unexpected failure, with not a single painting sold. These works would later go on to fetch millions at auction. It was one of Warhol's final exhibitions before his death in 1987.
