Yayoi Kusama's relationship with pumpkins has been close since her childhood. According to the artist, in one of her hallucinations, a pumpkin growing on her backyard talked to her. Since then Kusama uses these fruits as a recurrent element for having a tender nature and a delicate and beautiful shape.
