David Goldman is an award-winning documentary and portrait photographer and filmmaker whose work is grounded in human connection and shaped by a strong sense of authorship. Built on trust, observation, and engagement, his practice explores the space between photographer and subject.

“It’s a tremendous honour when someone allows me to create a photograph of them.”

That philosophy sits at the heart of Mirror Mirror.

What began as a portrait evolved into something more layered when David met photographer Jamie Nelson. Initially conceived as part of David's ongoing Motorcycle Portraits series, the project expanded as their relationship developed, opening a window into a world Jamie has consciously shaped and inhabited.

Jamie is not only a photographer, but a distinctive public persona. Her Los Angeles home, known as the “Pink Mansion”, has become an extension of her creative identity, a space where vintage glamour, sexuality, and self-expression coexist unapologetically. It is within this environment that Mirror Mirror unfolds.

The series presents an unusual dynamic: a photographer photographing another photographer. Jamie is deeply aware of the mechanics of image-making, of how photographs shape perception, identity, and public narrative. David enters that space as both observer and participant, creating images informed by collaboration and his own photographic perspective.

“I’m always interested in how a person sees themselves, and how that shifts once they’re in front of the lens.”

The resulting photographs are shaped by both self-representation and authorship. They invite a simple but important question: Who ultimately shapes an image, the subject or the photographer?

The photographs feel collaborative, but they remain defined by David’s perspective. Held together by trust, they capture not only who Jamie is, but how she has chosen to be seen.
