Since 1995, Vera Schuhmacher has represented well-known and emerging artists from abroad exclusively in the UK, selling their paintings, lithographs, silkscreen prints, and sculptures in well-established galleries and to collectors in the UK. She organises solo and joint exhibitions for her artists and presents their works at various UK art fairs.

She started her business successfully in 1997, with her first Gernot Kissel (1939-2008) solo exhibition in Mayfair, London. Known for his female portraits and intimate nudes, Kissel expressed a candid and powerful sensuality, demonstrating his love for women, which compels the observer.
Although times have changed with the #metoo movement, Vera states, “The first ever subject matter in antiquity was the female body. Presented in paintings and sculptures throughout the centuries, it has always been enjoyed by collectors.”

A worthy comparison of Kissel’s style is that he inevitably drew from the highly regarded and extremely fashionable German Expressionists of the early 20th Century, particularly Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Erich Heckel. His portraiture can also be associated with Alexey von Jawlensky. Further assessments may be made of the lavish, stylish canvases of Kees van Dongen and the British artist Sir Matthew Smith, for his strong sense of colour. By applying these foundations, Kissel developed his own unique visual language.

Kissel’s oeuvre is limited due to his sudden death in 2008, which has left a huge demand for his passionate paintings and works on paper. Vera is selling the few remaining artworks from private collections, keeping his legacy alive.

Vera is proud to celebrate her 25th company anniversary this year. She is a member of AWAD (the Association of Women Art Dealers, www.womenartdealers.org) and a partner of Artsper and Global Art Traders (https://www.globalarttraders.com/gallery/1384/vera_schuhmacher_fine_art_rene_pfister_art_gallery_consultancy).
