We are proud to have Popovy Sisters as one of 100 creative voices at Vogue World project.
Today the landscapes of fashion and culture are being radically reimagined, fueled largely by a global groundswell of new talent.
In the world of one-of-a-kind dolls (OOAKD), the name Popovy Sisters is writ large. Based in Saint Petersburg, Russia, Ekaterina and Elena Popovy meticulously handcraft hyperreal, posable dolls that combine elements of fantasy, fashion, and fetish. Among their collectors are the couturier Jean Paul Gaultier, Louis Vuitton shoe designer Fabrizio Viti, and Die Antwoord’s Yolandi Visser—who quite resembles a Popovy doll IRL.
Having expanded into fine art photography, video, and 3-D mapping, the sisters hope to transport their otherworldly dolls and art to the City of Angels, which seems a perfect fit. Hollywood is known as a “dream factory.” With a designer collaboration and a coffee-table book in the works, the Popovys are clearly gearing up for world domination. Here, they answer 10 questions for Vogue.

The Popovy Sisters, twins Ekaterina and Elena Popovy, are born and raised in Perm, Russia. Over the past decade, they have been perfecting hyper-realistic dolls paying close attention to each realistic human gesture, facial expression, and the infinite details when it comes to hair, make-up, and dress. The Popovy Sisters have a year-long waiting list to produce an actual doll for those invited to purchase, and now their followers are able to purchase fine-art photography of these dolls. The prints are produced by the highest quality materials and in small editions they are highly coveted and sought after. These photographs convey the overt style and femininity of each doll made by the Popovy Sisters.
The Sisters have developed a cult following, accumulating a quarter of a million followers on Instagram. They have been featured in Vogue Russia, Flaunt Magazine, Oneg Magazine, and Huffington Post. The Popovy Sisters are exclusively represented by JM Management located in Los Angeles.
These particular diptychs of photographs capture the most iconic dolls, including the commission by Jean-Paul Gaultier, Jeannette I + II. Coinciding with NY Fashion Week, these photographs pay homage to haute couture and fashion photography, mimicking the dramaticism of Richard Avedon and Helmut Newton’s portrait photography.
