Artist Focus: Damien Hirst - Spot Prints
Category: Features
The 'spot' theme is amongst Damien Hirst’s most widely recognised work. There are over 1000 paintings in existence and many limited edition prints, dating from 1986 to the present day. Hirst once explained, “mathematically, with the spot paintings, I probably discovered the most fundamentally important thing in any kind of art. which is the harmony of where colour can exist on its own, interacting with other colours in a perfect format.” Any problems he had previously had with colour Hirst claims, were removed by the perfect arrangement of complimentary, yet never repeated, colours in the spots.
Most of Hirst’s spot paintings and prints are named after ‘drugs’ used in the pharmaceutical industry, however on occasion he does produce something strikingly different, like the Mickey print from 2014.
