'Judith & Holofernes'
Framed to museum standard, this painting (acrylic on paper) formed part of Chris Gollon's 2014 - 2016 national touring exhibition to cathedrals 'Incarnation, Mary & Women from the Bible'. Gollon has chosen to paint a scene of female heroism, where Judith--to save her beseiged city--uses her beauty and sexuality to intoxicate and seduce the opposing army leader and then decapitate him in order to save her own people. Chris Gollon has loosely cast himself as Holofernes in this painting. This painting is also in the exhibition catalogue, with texts by art historian Tamsin Pickeral and award-winning novelist Sara Maitland.
London-born British artist Chris Gollon (1953 - 2017) was a very established and critically-acclaimed name in European painting, with many solo museum shows and museum acquisitions, including the British Museum.
